They used to be my favorite! I loved having the option to flip back and forth within a book based on the adventure I wanted to take. Of course, I always went back and read the "other" options, because I didn't want to miss out on an adventure that I could have taken! Do they even make Choose Your Own Adventure books anymore?
Don't ask me what got my mind thinking about Choose Your Own Adventure books this week, because I have no clue. But when I did start thinking about them, I realized that our own fitness journeys are exactly like a choose your own adventure story! Not everyone chooses the same chapter, and even though we can all end up at the same ending chapter, we make take many different paths to get there. There is no one size fits all in the fitness world, just as there is no one right path to take in a choose your own adventure book!
Before clients join me in the Trainer In Your Back Pocket® program (TBP for short), many of them think there is one specific path that is going to lead them to health. They think if they follow the ONE path, they will achieve what they desire... and fast. I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but that's not how it works. Sure, I would love for the TBP program to be the path that everyone takes, but it simply isn't for everyone. However, within the TBP program, there are enough paths for everyone to find the right adventure for them!
For example, maybe you're on the adventure/path of running. You love it. It's the "chapter" you chose. Then you break your leg. Now what? Do you just put the book down and forget about it? Or do you "choose a new adventure?" There are so many other adventures to choose from, no matter what chapter you're on. Maybe you break your leg and then pick up the chapter on upper body strengthening for a while. Or you focus on your core. Or maybe you switch gears completely and dive into those nutrition changes you've been meaning to take, or focus on your mindfulness for a while, implementing that new chapter into your life.
There's a gift that comes with being human. It's the gift of choices. It's the gift of endless chapters. If we don't like one chapter, or it simply isn't working out for us anymore, we have the CHOICE to choose the next adventure. It's kind of empowering if you think about it. I don't know how many times I've swapped chapters on my own fitness journey. The key is, you may enjoy a chapter for a while, and then you stop enjoying it. Just know it's OK to swap to the next adventure! There is no rule that says you must stay on the same chapter and drudge through it. And on the flip side, sometimes we must drudge through a chapter, simply as a means to get to the next one coming after it.
So, in our TBP program, that's why I have so many moving parts which allows you to literally, choose your own adventure! If this month you want to focus on nutrition, put your focus on our monthly nutrition lessons. Maybe you want to only focus on high intensity workouts. Well, put your focus onto those HIIT workouts from the monthly plan. Maybe you're being drawn to spending more energy on improving your mindfulness or personal development, then choose the Wellness Challenge chapter for the month.
The more I got to thinking about it, the more I realized that the TBP program is exactly like a choose your own adventure book. Of course, maybe you don't even have a clue what adventure you "should" be choosing. That's the beauty of having a coach, aka, a "trainer, in your back pocket!" I'm here for all of our TBP tribe members to help them choose the right adventure for them, at that particular moment in time.
If you don't like spinning class, choose something else. If you love kickboxing, do it more. If you hate going to the gym, choose workouts you can do at home. Do you see where I'm going with this? Find what you enjoy, and CHOOSE to do it more! Just remember, there's no rule that says you must enjoy it forever.
